Southern Way International is a 100% Australian owned company which was established in 1998. The founding and enduring principle of the company is to supply the Australian and international markets with quality furniture and design at an affordable price.
Our fully owned factory in China produces dining suites, bedroom furniture, entertainment units and occasional tables from designs and specifications developed by our in-house design team. Continual market research and assessment of international trends ensures our designs incorporate the style, features and benefits you require.
In Australia we distribute nationally through warehouses in Brisbane, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, which is also the location of our Head Office.
We provide products and customer service to major retailers as well as individual stores. Our relationship with you and them is based on the principal that our commitment begins rather than ends when we deliver our furniture.
Caring for the environment is very important to us and for this reason we have attained Forestry Stewardship Council Chain of Custody Certification for our factory (SGS-COC-010499). The rigorous and ongoing assessment process required to attain this level of certification ensures that the timbers we use have been sourced from ecologically sustainable managed forests or plantations. In addition to this we only use waterbased stains and lacquers. It costs us more to use these low impact environmentally friendly products but we believe we canĄ¯t care for one part of the environment and then be irresponsible with another part.
We are able to use many different species of quality timbers in the building of our furniture but we are mainly recognised for the designs we manufacture using Mountain Ash hardwood (Juglans spp.). This timber has a beautifully varied timber grain which we showcase as much as possible through the use of lighter toned staining. Each piece carries the swirls, knots and sap lines which are an historical record of the conditions which have prevailed throughout the life of each tree. Each tree has lived a unique life and subsequently each piece of furniture is also unique with the grain and marking characteristics giving testimony to that fact.
Each piece of furniture is crafted from carefully selected timbers which are shaped and finished by the most technologically advanced machinery. Once the initial phases of manufacture are completed skilled furniture craftspeople work by hand to construct a complete piece using timeless methods such as tongue & groove joints and mortise & tenon joints on structural areas, dovetailed joints on solid timber drawer casings and screwed, dowelled and glued corners. The result is a solid and robust piece of furniture which will stand the test of time. Our drawer runners are steel with steel ballbearing glides and feature double extensions to make sure the entire contents of a drawer are easily accessible and the drawer runners will function smoothly for the life of the furniture.
